Treatment Contraindications

When considering a treatment, it’s essential to evaluate factors that could impact its suitability and the results you wish to achieve. These factors are known as contraindications. Contraindications are specific conditions or circumstances that may require avoiding or modifying a particular beauty or aesthetic treatment to prevent harm or undesirable outcomes. Understanding these contraindications allows you and your aesthetician to make safe, personalised decisions tailored to your needs.

Sensitive Skin or History of Skin Reactions

Why: Sensitive skin may react to the heat, ingredients, or physical pulling involved in waxing.

Safety Concerns: Facial waxing on sensitive skin can cause redness, irritation, or swelling. For clients with highly sensitive skin, patch-testing a small area is recommended, and alternative hair removal methods may be suggested if irritation occurs.

Recent Use of Retinoids or Exfoliating Acids

(Retin-A, Tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs)

Why: Retinoids and exfoliating acids thin the skin, making it more vulnerable to irritation or tearing.

Safety Concerns: Waxing on skin treated with these products can lead to burns, skin lifting, or increased irritation. Clients should discontinue retinoids or acids at least 5-7 days before waxing, or longer if recommended by their dermatologist.

Use of Certain Acne Medications

(Accutane, Isotretinoin)

Why: Acne medications like Accutane thin the skin and increase sensitivity.

Safety Concerns: Waxing on skin treated with these medications can cause severe irritation, burns, or skin damage. Clients on Accutane should wait at least 6 months after discontinuing the medication before considering waxing.
